I am pretty sure.

This is the first real tree I think I ever bought.

Back story. My landlady was told by the local power company that the Black Oak 'Shade Tree' the city planted long time ago was going to probably snap the power lines to out homes after the first good hurricane that came along. The city is NOT responsible for it. So she asked me if I had any friends to cut it down. I did. Then she died. Then the tree hugger who drives an oil sucking car that probably kills tons of people in the long run reported her. So I gave in finally and bought a tree after I had another buddy take out the stump that was left. And let's add in that the tree had taken out a portion of the irrigation system that had to be fixed first. Many dollars later I bought the tree and had it planted.

This was not the first remodel of rental property I've done. I am into gardening as many of you may know. I've dug out a 1950's Japanese garden back in Reno along the Truckee River that stunned the owner's daughter (she'd inherited it after her dad passed and cried when she saw it). Back in Detroit I dug out a yard of spare bits and such and made a garden that was brick lines and had a tilted PVC pipe underground watering system. And then my years with my folks digging in the dirt.

Here hasn't been straight forward due to the crazy ass weather but I am making my way through it all.

I hope your garden grow and illuminate the world.Lydia Manxhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15973987908143309680noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-927006508237723946.post-90321726599550568012016-06-24T08:50:00.001-07:002016-06-24T08:50:23.234-07:00Summer Humming along

Yes those are hummingbirds at the top of the wind chime. For whatever reason I have found that in California and Arizona that seems to be a very popular spot for hummingbird nests. Fun to watch.

Been a brutal year but I am still kicking. Heat and thunderstorms make up most of the days at this point. I've not done enough writing but there have been tons of things keeping me crazy busy.

One of the side trips my Dad and I took was to La Jolla Cove along the coast where the seals are taking over the beaches. My aunt and uncle joined us. I was the only one who ventured down onto the beach due to the various 'conditions'. First Dad dropped us off to go find a parking space (rarity along the coast even in the middle of the day) - since he'd turned his ankle naturally he drove and hobbled. Once out of the car the lovely aroma of ode to marine life wafted up and tried to suffocate each of us quickly. The Cove is a protected environment for marine life. And after a lengthy legal battle the seals that whelp along the edge of this once lovely spot are not considered nuisances but special.

It must be noted at first they were only closing the 'Children's Pool' built decades ago to keep a small area safe for children to swim and avoid being shark dinner (by mistake) but as time and tempers flew the section of shore gave way to many more seals. For a long time the lifeguards would put up barriers and ticket anyone near the creatures but from my observation that has gone away. I actually watched while tourists backed up nearly with their tushes in the face of momma seals protecting their little ones while snapping selfies and group shots.

The other reason nobody ventured onto the actual beach was the fact signs were posted saying the water is contaminated with possibly deadly bacteria as the ocean is pretty much the seals toilet and rarely fully flushes. I snapped a few pictures and scrambled up the stairs when the tide rose and began to spatter those close to the toothy seals. I did find myself advising the twit challenging her boyfriend to be the first to hug a seal with an offhanded comment of, "I don't think the tickets are that much as these are a protected species but the mother seals do tend to bite." I had to...I mean really those seals don't need twit breath now do they?

We walked along the top of the beach and talked about the coastal changes. The tide pools we used to walk along and glimpse small fish, sea life and other tide pool fun had been decimated by the seals. I called the tide pools the seals dinner plates. Not a sea slug much less a crab to be seen. The mossy green slime was coated with well...shall we say smelly 'stuff'?

We did enjoy the walk once the wind blew the other direction. My uncle felt obligated to say that the sharks weren't doing their jobs very well given the number of seals we saw. The sharks were taking bites out of sea life just not the seals but silly surfers.

It was one of the nice breaks in my time out in California. So many of the days were spent dealing with loss and death. Circle of life sucks some times. But like the tree below from the park we make adjustments and continue on upwards.
My mother died. I am flying home to help and will be out there for nearly three weeks. No promises on the blog much less writing but who knows.

Love those you are with and tell them. I am at peace with that since every time I spoke with my folks I told them that I loved them. They didn't reply in kind for years (it wasn't in their own histories) but in the past three years I heard those words from both my parents once a week at the very least. It's spring now so the morning temperatures are in low 70s and highs mid 80s. Too bad that will change in weeks if not sooner. Spring seems to get skipped in these parts. I have worked on the yard lately. Trimming up trees and bushes while working on ridding the lawn from nasty weeds.

This one above not as nasty but still evil.

That said these can't be simply pulled out or mowed down but have to go see specialists to get the correct treatment. Sigh. Since I put the stuff down not a drop of rain so I will be forced to run my sprinklers tonight. So much fun * not *

Thanks Facebook. I wouldn't have known such a day existed. Yeah, That's how I find things out. FaceyWacey book!

Us as kids decades ago. Easter this time of year. Suits and matching dresses and hats for me and my sister.

Great weather this weekend. I didn't write enough but had a great time with friends and got in yard work. I am a geek that way.

Not too much more. My friend's boyfriend dropped me off two dozen roses the other night. He brought home two dozen to her also. I still don't know why but hey here they are. And I am sipping wine.

One month left at job then I have a slight cushion while finding new one. Scary but cool because I know I will get some writing in with the hiatus. April was always the writers prompt from some NaNoWriMo friends to write with goals self-proclaimed in a group. It was online with T-Shirts, mugs and other bling available declaring our Foolishness.

Hope you all savor your week and enjoy your weekends.
Rainy Tuesday but no tornado here this time. This has been one crazy ass March. Words don't escape me but the swearing kind aren't good.

Tomorrow will begin April and I usually do April Fools writing challenge. The site that we used to all record and push each other has gone the way of old sites...dust in the bin. But I want to start that little challenge anyways. I have zombies to raise as it were.

That said I wonder how bad this coming hurricane season is going to be.

Good news my writer friend Barry wasn't in Brussels today. That was last week. He was in Paris when that nasty bit hit so I was concerned. I count my blessings where I get them now.

Tough dang decade (I stopped counting years and slid into the next bookmark). Too many deaths, work issues, friends with troubles....all starting to wear at me. I have tons of words and so little time. As some know I have a nasty dreamscape when I don't write. I don't thinking I am screaming aloud but with the dog nudging me awake some nights or the cat I could be wrong.

A writer's mind is unique to each of us creatures. Personally writing chases out the worries and actively crappy things happening and lately I haven't been clocking enough sentences much less pages. So my monster come look for me. I am screaming help or get the hell away from me - laced with some nasty cuss words. Thankfully my closest neighbor is totally trashed by dark and never hears me.

I hope everyone has a good week. This too shall pass.Lydia Manxhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15973987908143309680noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-927006508237723946.post-39456537318092164722016-03-15T17:05:00.001-07:002016-03-15T17:05:10.307-07:00Stepping out

My friends talked me into stepping out on Friday to hear a local band they raved about and said it was a must hear. Supposed to be like Stevie Ray Vonn (spelling?) but not so much. I still had fun.

Work's oddly distracting. Being laid off but not until May means I can't do too much looking for a job or I lose the the perks. The frustration of being oh-so-nice is exhausting. Add in the time change and I am one tired woman.

So the manager announced the three of us being given the 'opportunity' of being laid off and then had the gall to ask for ideas for our going away party. No I am not kidding.

Not much more to add. Go figure.

Yeah my life went butter side down again. As of May 6th I will be officially laid off from my job of nearly six years because of outsourcing. I've been told many times this is a great opportunity for me - and it will be - but dang!

So I took Friday off to wrap my head around my growing opportunity after being violently ill Thursday o'dark and pretty much giving myself a slightly sprained neck aka whiplash.

Monday I walk into work still stiff and one of the other gals in the office tells me I look like a princess. OMG so a stiff neck and sheer pride makes me look regal? Or was it the glint of 'off with their heads' caught her attention. It reminded of me a game my mom used to play with us kids on rainy days (I am certain they were rainy days because otherwise we would have been outside terrorizing our neighbors and their kids). Show of hands ... who put hardcover books on top of their heads and walked around trying to keep the book or books from falling off with their siblings?

Hands? Dang just me? I knew it was a game to amuse my mom more than us but I was good at it!

So keep me in your thoughts guys and gals since this is flipping my muse into hiding mode because stress mode is pushing harder!!!!

I have a rather torrid confession to make. I am a candle fan. Not just any candles but lovely, expensive sorts. Party-Lite candles end up as liquid and disappear completely. What's not to love? They have great scents and I've been burning them in my Himalayan Candle holders. They are salt carved and supposedly cleansing. Bed, Bath and Beyond with coupon worked for me. I've been burning in bathroom when company over and in kitchen when cooking.

Now to some bad news. My nephew's father-in-law passed this past month and Friday is service. There is no way for me to make it but others will. That means all of my nephew's wife's family have died in the past 3 years. Horrid.

Writing not so good ...too much noise in my life and my world.

Checked off "See professional golf tourney" Honda Classic. Probably won't go to another ever again but hey...did it.Lydia Manxhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15973987908143309680noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-927006508237723946.post-11172353899653548372016-02-21T17:14:00.001-08:002016-02-21T17:14:57.100-08:00Wild week in FebruaryThere are times I am truly floored by what happens in my world. I've had folks tell me that I had to be fibbing (or lying) at the very least telling tall tales. Nope. Tis my world.

A tornado touched down in my area. A block over trees were ripped up by their root balls and sent into traffic and pathways. Power outage for a couple of hours. Some traumatized pets (mine included - they don't like that sort of noise) while my next door neighbor slept through it.

Fences were pushed around and some of the duplex attached to me had some damage on the roof. So this weekend was fencing and roof work. The last worker left hour or so ago. I have pictures but wasn't able to paste them in (yet?).

Still not writing enough to feed my muse but I am enjoying others work and trying to keep my humor in place. Tough some days you all know. The weather from tornado to gorgeous weekend what a world.

Hope you are all well.
My dog has his own Disney stuffed toy. It is called Sadness. For some reason he snagged it when I got it right out of the box and decided it was his new pillow. Some days he literally cuddles it. So ...touching. Jack doesn't like toys as a rule because he doesn't know that he is a dog.

Did battles with Xfinto (Xfinity) Comcast for the past 72 hours. Bought the new "must upgrade" BS finally and went to install on Saturday. It didn't work. Three long phone calls later only one TV worked and the other was definitely butter side down with a heap of puppy poop on top. Confirmed yesterday when they were forced to send out not one but TWO technicians. Not only was the second 'box' dead in the water (or bedroom what have you) but turned out that nothing was going to work well without switching out some components outside on the damn roof I think. Either was all good now but payback is going to be ...ME.

Lent is starting tomorrow and I always do my best to spend that time to think and listen. Listening is hard but in long run helpful.

Hope you all are well.Lydia Manxhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15973987908143309680noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-927006508237723946.post-11733899731911239202016-02-06T18:52:00.000-08:002016-02-06T18:52:12.362-08:00February again....go figure

So I have the cover in Piker Press this week. http:www.PikerPress.com and I always love it when I start a new tale.

This year has been crazy already. Work has been challenging to say the least. Enough said for that weird trip. Oh, wait. Too funny I did one of those 'mandatory' aka "volunteer' studies sent out from corporate. The 'bait' is the 'reward' of $50 gift certificate. The 'switch' was it was to the company run merchandise shop survey. I laughed when I saw that was the 'reward' if chosen at random. I pretty much trashed the bs nicely and damned if I didn't win!! The kicker there is NOTHING I want there but I must use the full 50 in one shopping experience.

I just spent most of my Saturday dealing with Xfinity to no resolution that is worthy of all my day. I am trying to not rant but wow....really??? For the past six months the company has been nagging me to upgrade my cable box with all this free and easy ...stuff. They lied. They will pay. I have guests coming tomorrow and only one TV. Need I say more?

At least it's not snowing. But it is raining. Lydia Manxhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15973987908143309680noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-927006508237723946.post-28887924395371041802016-01-30T18:46:00.000-08:002016-01-30T18:46:52.353-08:00Night JobSo I have a new tale launching this February on Piker Press www.pikerpress.com and my friend Sand told me that Piker kept trying to push my tale into another novel long written. So we are working on new story title. It cracks me up. That said - go find and enjoy.

This week has had wacky weather. Cold and tornado filled. Mid week I figured out that I was so bad on updating my existence on social media it caused stress for my family on the other side of my universe. As I told my dad this week...'Bad news travels fast' but at the same time I got it. Growing up most people moved less than a few miles from their folks once married. Now we don't think anything about living thousand of miles from our loved ones.

Work is wearing me down. I hope you are all well.
I wish it looked like this but alas it is pouring rain outside and I have yet to finish taking out the garbage. Yay me for procrastinating.

So in the past week both the big blue recycle bin and a gray one for trash. I was pretty stunned that they haven't done much in the way of catching up to the year 2016 for basic trash services here. I am pretty sure we started recycling curbside in California in the mid eighties.

I didn't bother to watch the debates. I am pretty much sick of the whole dark side of politics but that's not new for me. I think after a certain city councilman later mayor hit on me after meeting me shoved the slimy factor of pols into my circle of awareness. The dude was married!! I guess he didn't think I'd ever figure that out. I did. The nasty taste still remains to this day.

Writing front my latest story is hitting Piker Press next week. The past three weeks led into this novel with the short backstory that I fast forwarded to present day. www.pikerpress.com will have the fun!
Doing my best to keep the reason for the season in my thoughts. Been rough lately. Enough about that.

Haven't done much writing other than Christmas cards since November. But I liked my NaNo and have more to go. Two four day weekends starting next week so I will do my best.

Happy Holidays to all and know that you are all loved. Seriously. That is the reason for the season.Lydia Manxhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15973987908143309680noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-927006508237723946.post-66545347640226691952015-12-08T18:51:00.000-08:002015-12-08T18:51:00.135-08:00December thoughts

So if you look closely you can see some white bits in the shot with palm trees and kids. The local mall did this big event last Saturday unbeknownst to me when I went to grab some cards. There were events all over with kids running and crying. But mostly they were having fun once you culled out the whiny spoiled ones from the mass. Given it was raining at the time the soap fake snow didn't last long.

I have twenty eps rocking to go but I think they will roll in February and hopefully have another dozen to add to the mix. The tale is my NaNo take away. Night Job - fun. Make sure to check out www.pikerpress.com because there are some great authors rolling out some great tales. January there should be some fun recipes and if I get my stuff together a few from me.

I did some more work on my tree and a few of my favorites are up now.

Jasmine is getting older but still a crafty cat. She was perching over my head when I was in the bed watching TV. I grab the shot and she turned tale and meowed her way out of the room until I let her coax me into to petting her.

Stressful year. I did finish NaNo but I thought the last 10K was rubbish that will go into my 'one day' file. I already pulled most of it out of my tale Night Job and have a solid 40K to polish and such. I think at least another 60K will complete this story but will check with Sand Pilarski if she wants to wait or will take my offering for now.

My landlady passed last month and Thursday will be the service. Found out today that half the remaining siblings are thinking of selling the place in the future. Razzle Dazzle time or let this slice of paradise go away? That truly is the question.
Happy Thanksgiving to one and all five of my readers :)

Still working on NaNo. I actually like it and over 40K. The next 10K will be junk mostly. Random what if scenarios to complete NaNo but at least this much I feel works and flows.
Unlike my year. There are years when I just go...come on now really???? And this was one of those. Every time I brush myself off from the latest character building happenstance something more horrific tends to rear its ugly head. Sort of like well my monsters in my stories. Anyone wonder where I get the fuel?

Back to writing. Lydia Manxhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15973987908143309680noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-927006508237723946.post-67938805101883110512015-11-12T15:58:00.000-08:002015-11-12T15:58:00.513-08:00Day 12 NaNo

Cloudy sky here but nothing like all the rest of the nation. Promises of "cooler" weather like down to the 70s!

NaNo has been skittering off a bit at times given the lousy work condition and various interrupting junk I cleared 15K at lunch. Way short but the story isn't falling but my exhaustion has been pretty severe. A bit of OT and tons of stress at work has cut out my hour plus of free writing time down to 15 or 20 minutes a day during break. After dinner and all that I get hour or so in thus only a bit over a thousand words a day. I still am pleased with the tale. Night Job is roughly ten years later from Lindy Dough of the Dead Zombie romp I did back in 2007. Yep. Since then Hollywood has gone nuts for Zombies! Go figure huh?

Well back to the words.
Life tends to plan while I try to live. That said I brought home some nummy See's candies from my visit home last month. Stuffed the box above in the produce keeper drawer where I would nibble a piece after long days. I have been pretty good because my writing time has been slashed to minutes and dreams some days but still I like what I am doing. That means my treats are lasting longer!

I started with an idea for Piker Press http://www.pikerpress.com for the Day of the Dead and stuffed it into my NaNo box instead. Basically my short stories for previous Piker Press work netted a zombie tale years ago. I mean like nearly ten. During this time Zombies became the rage. Hell, I'd already done it. Smug I figured I'd toss together a bit of a creepy tale and suddenly my brain was being devoured. Thus I started 'Night Job' on November first for NaNo. Up to 11K right now and aiming for another thousand before I sleep. Not on schedule for the NaNo numbers but a good weekend can catch me up if the world lets me do it.
Fun story and it's clearing cobwebs from this past year and creating more fun!
My cover for Night Job writing for NaNo. Yeah, I am doing it again. Over twelve years. I did this painting last month on mandatory "Team Building" outing. Job still as fun as ever. Good news in all the working on my system issues I was able to finally get Chrome loaded and got access to my blog page again.
Such is life.
